A comprehensive digital signage solution was implemented at Schmidts Märkte XL in Bad Säckingen, integrating the retail and food service areas. The goal was to communicate the store’s wide range of offerings in a structured, flexible, and up-to-date manner.
Spanning approximately 3,000 square meters of retail space, the XL supermarket combines traditional grocery sections with dining options, a prepared food counter, and sushi offerings. This diversity presented significant challenges for customer communication.
Information, promotions, and menu items needed to be updated quickly while also being displayed in a targeted manner at various touchpoints throughout the store. Traditional communication channels were unable to adequately capture this dynamic.

Wedeko, a brand of Bütema AG, developed a comprehensive digital signage concept that integrates all relevant touchpoints in the store. The goal was to engage customers throughout their entire visit—from the entrance area to the checkout zone.
The concept combines various display solutions, each tailored to its specific application, with centralized content management. This creates a seamless system that supports both information dissemination and sales promotion.

The project was carried out in late 2019 by Wedeko’s installation team. During the project, various display solutions were installed throughout the store, and existing systems were integrated.
Mobile, battery-powered eStoppers are being used in the entrance area, where they can be flexibly deployed for current promotions. In the food service area, several digital menu boards have been installed—both at the in-house kitchen snack bar and at the salad bar—to display the menu offerings in a structured manner and updated daily.
Additional displays were strategically placed along the customer flow paths:
Menu board solutions have also been installed behind the counter and at other locations—such as the store in Bonndorf.
The content is managed centrally via the digital signage software and regularly updated by Wedeko's graphics team.
Today, the digital signage system enables flexible and targeted customer engagement throughout the store. Offers and promotions can be adjusted at short notice and displayed across all locations.
The combination of retail and food service communication provides clear guidance while also encouraging impulse purchases. Content is presented in a visually appealing way and helps enhance the overall shopping experience.
The project demonstrates how digital solutions can be used to structure and further develop complex retail formats in the food retail sector. Digital signage serves as the connecting element between the product range, food service, and customer guidance.
